A dialogue exists between the man-made histories of forgotten mining communities in the Colorado Rockies as well as in the geological histories of the landscapes they existed in. Erosion lines, ore veins, mining trails, and abandoned roadways have become a linear fascination in my work. This series is part performance and ritual and part site-specific, ephemeral land art. The sculpture is both an observation telescope to the heavens and a marker of time. Each year on August 8th at 4:00pm the sun aligns with the telescope and marks a circle of light in the shadow of the sculpture. .The 1500 pound cast iron tube was created in a 20,000 pound sand mold. The Iron.Stone Symposium was held in conjunction with the 7th International Conference on Contemporary Cast Iron Art. Meteorite is a permanent addition to the collection of Pedvale Open-Air Museum. Link to short film and conference website This installation presents a multi-layered metaphor involving earth and our relationship to space and the cosmos. The sculpture is comprised of materials donated from the abandoned manufacturing company Harris Machinery in Minneapolis, MN. The Harris Machinery Company made many industrial products over the span of nearly 100 years, including military canvass heating ducts used in the Korean War. The source data and image came from a black and white photograph of cracked earth. This source data was stretched and altered over the surface of a sphere in the modeling program Blender, resulting in a landscape of fissures and mountains. Next, a duplicate layer the exact opposite of the surface layer was created. Both layers were then split into twenty sections and 11 of these “pair sections” were cut out of foam with a CNC router. Each “pair section” has a circular key/core print to register it to its corresponding side. All of the sections were then molded in resin sand and assembled as one mold with an external gating system, which was also built in resin sand. This project was molded and cast at Sloss Historic Furnaces in Birmingham, AL, during the National Conference on Cast Iron Art and Practices in 2019. The source imagery for the CNC routed patterns is captured from satellite images of the surface of the Earth, Moon and Mars. This project began with a computer model of a hemoglobin protein from an open source database for medical research. The model was sliced into horizontal layers and the surface textures were layered over a cylinder form using the modeling program Blender. The cylinder was then cut into 20 equal pieces and these models were then cut out of foam with a CNC router. The foam patterns were then molded in resin sand. I then took resin sand molds off of the existing sand mold pieces to create their exact opposite counterpart. The sand mold pieces were then assembled together leaving a space between them for the cast metal to flow into. An external gating system was created, also out of resin sand, and the entire assembly was cast as one mold.
